Dogs with two copies of the MDR1 mutation cannot process certain drugs normally — including ivermectin, loperamide, and several chemotherapy agents. A single DNA test identifies all three variants (MDR1 +/+, +/–, –/–).

OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) grades hips Excellent, Good, Fair, Borderline, and three levels of Dysplasia. Responsible breeders test both parents — ask to see the OFA certificate, not just "the parents were tested."

COI measures how likely a dog is to inherit identical alleles from both parents. BC breeders aim below 6.25% (equivalent to first-cousin mating). Higher COI correlates with reduced immune function and shorter lifespan.

Double Merle (MM)

High risk of blindness, deafness, and vision/hearing defects. Should never be bred intentionally.

Merle (Mm)

Typical merle coat. May have slightly higher eye/ear screening needs. Can safely be bred to non-merle.

Non-Merle (mm)

No merle-related health concerns. Safest choice when pairing with a merle parent.

BCs can develop congenital and acquired heart conditions. A grade I–II murmur may be innocent; grade III+ warrants echocardiography. The waveform below simulates a grade II murmur — a subtle early-systolic sound your vet will describe as "soft."
